Clearing artefact badge information ...

Does anybody know if there is a way of clearing the 'badge count' associated with an application?

It was startling to discover that badge showing the number of items for an app seems to be held independently of the installation.

I just updated NetNewsReader to version 2 and whereas the previous version used to display via a badge count the number of items waiting to be read the new version doesn't. And it also doesn't clear the counter assoiciated with the previous version of the app.

Presumably since the application is sharing some sort of ID the iPhone OS is picking up the values for the number of items to display on the badge from a seperate storage area to the information directly related to the app. The fact that removing and reinstalling the app doesn't clear the count seems to back this up.

Other posts say '...oh it fixed itself when I paid for the premium version'. Well that's obvious why that 'fixes' it because you have a different app and a different identifier so iPhone OS isn't going to display the old badge information any more.

No, I want to clear that badge information out for this app but preferrably I don't want to reset my iPhone to do it just because the devs of NetNewsWire didn't think to clear the badges because they weren't supporting them in version 2.0.

Any ideas folks?
